In April 2025, the Government of Punjab has taken a groundbreaking step by launching Pakistan’s first SMART Environment Protection Force, also known as the Environment Protection Squad (EPS). This initiative marks a new era of eco-enforcement, combining modern technology with field-based patrolling to combat pollution in all major sectors.
The Force consists of multiple specialized squads, each dedicated to solving a specific environmental problem.

The Green Squad focuses on anti-plastic campaigns, urban dust control, and dengue prevention. To promote sustainability, members of this squad use eco-friendly e-bikes for patrolling.
The Blue Squad protects rivers, canals, and other water bodies from industrial and domestic contamination. Meanwhile, the Black Squad monitors vehicle emissions and conducts on-road fuel testing to stop the release of toxic fumes. Industrial safety is handled by the Red Squad, which inspects factories, hospitals, and hazardous waste sites to prevent illegal dumping.
One of the most innovative additions is the Hawk Eye Squad, equipped with 360-degree live surveillance vehicles and thermal drones capable of night monitoring. These drones help track hidden pollution sources such as illegal burning and waste disposal.
A dedicated Brick Kiln Squad has also been formed to regulate traditional kiln operations, ensuring compliance with eco-friendly technology.
To improve monitoring accuracy, the EPA has also introduced a Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Station along with a digital Emission Testing System for vehicles. A new Environmental Approval Management System will further streamline industrial compliance and documentation.
Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz personally attended the passing-out parade of the force, emphasizing that environmental protection is now a government priority, not just a policy statement. With this initiative, Punjab has become the first province in Pakistan to deploy a uniformed environmental enforcement squad—setting a powerful example for the rest of the country.
